Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive, high-resolution imaging technique widely used in ophthalmology, cardiology, and other medical fields to capture detailed cross-sectional images of tissues, most commonly the eye. OCT works similarly to ultrasound but uses light waves instead of sound waves to create detailed images, providing high-resolution images of the internal structures, especially the layers of the retina in the eye.

Key Features of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
High-Resolution Imaging:
OCT provides micrometer-scale resolution, typically ranging from 5 to 10 microns, offering highly detailed images of internal structures.

Non-invasive:
OCT is a non-contact, non-invasive imaging technique that does not require the patient to undergo surgery or injections to obtain images. This makes it particularly useful for monitoring conditions over time without discomfort or risk to the patient.

Real-Time Imaging:
OCT provides real-time images, making it easier for clinicians to view and assess conditions immediately during the examination.

Cross-Sectional Imaging:
OCT generates cross-sectional (tomographic) images of tissue, similar to how an MRI or CT scan works, but at a much higher resolution. This allows the visualization of the layers of the retina or other tissues.

No Radiation:
Unlike X-ray-based imaging technologies, OCT does not expose patients to ionizing radiation, making it a safer imaging technique, especially for frequent monitoring.

Wide Range of Applications:
OCT is primarily used in ophthalmology, but it's also increasingly used in cardiology, dermatology, dentistry, and oncology to visualize tissues at a microscopic level.
